Nottingham Day 1 of 2: Learning Real Life in the U.K - Ethan Zweig
Nottingham Day 1 - Learning Real Life in the U.K
This was one of the most tiring days we have had so far on this trip. We started this day with a quick breakfast at the Holiday Inn in Cambridge and then it was straight to the train station to start traveling to Nottingham. Unfortunately, there was no direct train route from Cambridge to Nottingham meaning that we had to take two different trains. We took our first train over to a town called Peterborough. Since the train was really packed, there were barely any places to sit and no places to put our luggage. Once we got to the station in Peterborough it took us a little while to figure out which train we needed to take to Nottingham. When arriving in Nottingham, the city welcomed us with pouring rain showers while we were walking to our hotel which wasn’t very close to the train station. During this our group learned how to work as a team to navigate through public transportation in a different country.
After a quick lunch at the hotel, we made our way to the University of Nottingham.
We got a quick look at the biology lab and learned a lot about the program and what exactly they teach.
Then we had two student tour guides who were both from the United States give us a complete tour of
the university. The tour guides being from the U.S. was really useful because they told us the
differences between college in the States and college in the U.K. One of the differences that
were really interesting
was that in universities in the U.K, the residence halls have rooms for one person only, meaning that
it’s not normal to have a roommate. Our group then got to have a tour of the sports center where we
got to check out the training facilities and different sports that are played at the university. There was
even a table tennis tournament happening on the basketball court which had some of the best table
tennis players in the U.K. The college tour gave us a great perspective on college life in the U.K. and
how it is different from the U.S.
Oh man! Sounds like a wet welcome to Nottingham, indeed! It also sounds like you all are all being (trying to be?!?) super resilient. Sending sunshine!
